In The Crucible, John Proctor is illustrative of both of these definitions due to the circumstances that he should survive and the individuals that he needs to manage. Abigail Williams, the instigator of the ?had? youngsters, is the wellspring of Proctor?s issues, and it is his test to endeavor to win the fight against her and the persistent town. John Proctor can be viewed as a tough man.
